Sneak Peek Mr & Mrs Chapa

5/18/2015

Ladies and Gentleman….. Introducing Mr & Mrs Chapa!

This wonderful couple tied the knot on 5 . 16 . 15

The day started at Ulta Beauty Salon in San Marcos, TX, where the ladies enjoyed a morning of pampering! Hair and make up where done and then it was off for a quick bite to eat before we made our way to the church. Erica and I had a little time alone after lunch. We spoke about life, hardships, love and what marriage is about and what it means to us. Folks, this pretty little lady has one of the best grasps of what it takes to make a marriage work and boy, is Anthony lucky to have her!

We arrived at St Anthony’s Catholic Church and once inside of the bridal room, I witnessed what love and family is all about. Erica and Anthony both come from large Hispanic families and I learned in that valuable time what was so precious about their heritage and culture. They care so deeply for each other and you can tell in about two minutes they would do anything for anyone. I was no longer their photographer, I was welcomed with opened arms as a friend.

I left the bride for a few minutes to meet the groom and his parents outside to witness a very extraordinary moment of a mother and son pinning their boutonnieres on each other. May sound like a simple experience, but it was a moment that no words were needed. The look in Anthony’s fathers eyes said it all. Afterwards, I delivered a letter from Erica for Anthony and watched the emotional moment he read the last words he would ever read from his fiancé before she became his wife. I’d be lying if I said a lump didn’t form in my throat.

Once back inside the bridal room, it was Erica’s turn to read Anthony’s letter. As her eyes moved over the special words he wrote, the smile that appeared on her lips meant that she knew she was marrying her soul mate and best friend. She knew what a miracle she had found in the man that was about to become her husband.

And then it was time!!! Erica’s mother walked her down the aisle and that moment will forever be cherished in their hearts. The way Anthony looked towards his bride was the way every women prays to be looked at on her wedding day. The ceremony was heartfelt and beautiful and you could feel God was there giving His blessing over the joining of these two lives and two families.

After the ceremony it was off to the reception! Now if you know anything about this wedding, you know that we were all soooooo worried about the weather, as we have been having terrible storms in the area! The forecast called for 60% chance of thunderstorms and the reception was the outdoor rooftop at Trudys Four Star in Austin! Again, God stepped in! He gave us a stunning afternoon with sunshine and a breeze to keep us cool! The celebration was full of laughter, dancing, hugs and even more love!

Anthony and Erica, saying thank you doesn’t really feel like enough here. You may not have noticed because I had a camera to hide behind, but your wedding day touched me deep into my soul and if any of your pictures are blurry…. well we can blame that on the tears I felt creeping into my eyes at many times throughout the day! I may be giving you pictures to cherish for the rest of your lives, but you also gave me a gift…. Your friendship and the reward of seeing two incredible people so deeply in love and your trust in me to be a part of and capture your day. That is something I will be eternally grateful for.

XoXo,
Amy.

I'm very excited to announce a little secret I have been working on!
My newest website.... www.DoGoodTexas.com

I have become more involved in these events recently after seeing a huge need in our local community. There are so many incredible people out there that need a helping hand and so many wonderful people wanting to give in any way they can. But sadly, sometimes the two are not always connected, and well folks…. I hope to be able to change that!

I always shared the causes on my facebook page and website, but there were just too many to post constantly and I think half of my friends had probably blocked me from their newsfeed haha!

So the idea popped into my head to create a space for like minded people to give, or get help. A place to generate awareness and an opportunity for those wanting to give back and help the Texas community.

Do Good Texas was created in May of 2015 out of a deep and passionate desire to make a difference. What I hope this evolves into is a source full of heart and love that brings a community closer together and really makes a difference.

This site is brand new, so please be patient with me while it grows and I work out the kinks! All suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Please remember folks that this will only be a success with your help so please be sure to check out, LIKE and share the facebook page too.... www.facebook.com/DoGoodTexas

Love, hugs and Texas,

Business shoot with the Dillingham Team

5/7/2015

When my dear friend and personal realtor approached me and inquired about a headshot shoot for his realtor team, I knew we were in for a fun time! Jeff, Kendall and Saskia are the kindest and nicest people this side of the Mississippi.... ok probably the nicest people anywhere, but it sounds good! (Is it bad that I'm over 30 and still have to sing the "Mississippi song" in my head to spell it? Haha I know I'm not the only one!)
They are brilliant people that like to think outside of the box, so they suggested a shoot at the San Antonio botanical gardens. As soon as we entered the gardens Jeff spotted a giant oversized chair and insisted on a Captain Morgan pose and folks.... that set the tone for the day. As we strolled through the beautiful gardens we captured many wonderful shots and I'd like to share a few with you here!
If you are in the market to buy or sell, I give you my word, no one will take better care of you than these amazing people! You can contact them HERE.
Thank you Jeff, Kendall and Saskia for such a great experience!

Sneak peek - Marylee fundraiser!

Sweet Marylee suffered a severe Pancreatic Attack on February 18th, 2015 and was in the hospital for more than 6 weeks, with 3 weeks spent in the ICU due to a nosocomial infection. Unfortunately, she doesn't have health insurance or short term disability, so she has not received any income, plus she is a single mother with two sons at home.
On May3rd, we all came together as the AMAZING community and threw one heck of a party in her honor at Billys Ice in New Braunfels, TX!
It continues to amaze me to see this town always show up and step up when someone is in need. To all of the people that donated auction items, food, their talent, etc etc..... THANK YOU!
And even though the fundrasier is now past, if you'd like to help Marylee, please visit the link below!

Kelley & Mark Engagement Shoot

4/21/2015

I used to think that this was the definition of photogenic:

1)  (especially of a person) looking attractive in photographs or on film. "a photogenic child".
2)  BIOLOGY (of an organism or tissue) producing or emitting light.

Now I know that it actually means Mark and Kelley!
Normally I have no issue picking the sneak peak images for my blog, but my goodness it was impossible this time! They are stunning in every image! If Disney ever needs Cinderella and Prince Charming, I know who to put them in touch with haha!

I have fallen head over heels for these two. I love everything about them! They are soooooo much fun and their personalities make my heart happy!

Oh and a little fun fact for you Kelley and Mark…. Did you know you are getting married on “talk like a pirate day” and my dogs birthday? Makes you just that much cooler haha! Only 149 days til they say “I do”!

The Williams Wedding

3/26/2015

I met Jessica... now Mrs Williams, about 3 years ago and we quickly became good friends. Both having European roots, we had a lot to bond over, along with the fact that we were both single and looking haha! We shared many fun times and numerous conversations about what we wanted out of life. For Jessica, that was to be a good "mum", to be happy and find someone to share all the amazing, giving and selfless love she had inside of her. Well folks, this pretty little lady did exactly that. She has found a wonderful husband in Steve. He loves her totally and completely, and when you watch the way he is with her girls, you feel a lump starting to form in your throat. Steve has also found a gem in Jessica. When Jessica loves, she loves big and he is truly blessed to have her as his wife.

The day started at The Wildflower Barn, where we set up tables, decorations, flowers etc etc. Jessica’s dear friend JoAnna was a miracle worker and made sure everything was perfect, while balancing her baby on one hip! What stood out to me is that normally it’s the women that handle all of the set up and details, but not today! Steve, his brother Kevin and their friend Todd took care of so much! My hat is off to you guys! Next it was off to the Brides dressing room to get ready. Jessica’s sisters joined us and Amanda applied Jessica’s make up perfectly, while Colleen styled the girls hair. The second Jessica slipped in to her wedding dress, I couldn’t help but smile. She is a beautiful woman, but I have never seen her look more stunning and full of elegance and grace.

When we arrived at Chapel Dulcinea, Jessica’s father Rick helped her out of the car with a look of pride on his face that only a father looking at his little girl can know. Meanwhile, Steve was awaiting his Bride inside the Chapel, and somehow managed to pull off waiting without looking nervous at all! Guess that’s easy to do when you know you are exactly where God wants you to be! As Jessica was escorted down the aisle by her father, Steves face lit up and a feeling took over inside of that chapel that all was right with the world. Jessica and Steven read heartwarming vows to her daughters, Carolyn and Lexie, and I believe every person in the building was inspired and touched. Jessica’s friend Kim performed the ceremony and her meaningful words filled everyone’s hearts with tenderness and warmth. With the exchange of ‘I do’s and the ringing of the bell, a new family was formed!

Now it was time to party! Back at The Wildflower Barn, the cake was cut, first dance was danced and the bouquet was tossed! The rest of the evening was filled with laughter, smiles, dancing, more dancing and incredible memories were made that will remain cherished in all of our hearts forever. Sharing their wedding day with Jessica, Steve and their families was an absolute pleasure. These two families who are now joined as one, are the model example of tenderness, affection, caring, loyalty and devotion. I'm excited to see their journey over the years and am honored to call them my friends.

Mr & Mrs Williams, from the bottom of my heart, thank you for your trust and faith in me. I love y'all,

Senior Session With Nicole!

For months, Nicole and I tried to arrange her senior portraits shoot. Notice I say "tried"! Something always popped up and we could not nail down a date! Finally we agreed upon February 8th.... and we stuck to it! WooHoooo!
Nicole is a total sweetheart and soooo laid back! She had never done a photoshoot before, so it was a very hands on process from start to finish! Everything from figuring out clothes to hair to make up! At our first consult I showed up with a bag of gear for her to go through and luckily we found a few things that she loved!
Nicole is an incredibly active senior who attends school, has a job and plays basketball, soccer and softball. That doesn't leave this pretty lady with much time to worry about make up, hair etc, so we agreed I would apply it for her the day of the shoot and do her hair. Well folks, that's when I got nervous haha! I have never put someone else's make up on before!

With a stroke of luck, everything turned out wonderfully! This gal seriously has the most intense beautiful eyes! Just check them out in the pictures!
So after preparing outfits, curling her hair and powdering her nose, we hit the streets of New Braunfels for our shoot and it was a fantastic day!

How to take better cell phone pictures!

2/20/2015

A question I often get asked by people who believe they know a thing or two (or a million) about photography and consider themselves somewhat of an expert, is what equipment do I use. When I hear this question, my internal giggle machine is turned on. I meet people that proudly boast they just got the newest fastest most expensive piece of photography equipment that has ever existed.  And in that moment…. I know that they know zilch about REAL photography.

If you can shoot well, all you need is a disposable, toy camera or a camera phone to create great work. If you're not talented, it doesn't matter if you buy a Nikon D3X or Leica; your work will still be uninspired. It's always better to spend your time and money on learning art and photography, not by spending it on more cameras or lenses.

Why is it that with over 70 plus years of advancements in cameras, lens sharpness and film grain, resolution and dynamic range that no one has been able to equal what my hero Ansel Adams did back in the 1940s? Ansel didn't even have Photoshop! How did he do it? Most attempts fall short, some are as good but different like Jack Dykinga, but no one is the same.

Simply buying a Lamborghini doesn't mean you can drive a car like a stunt driver, and likewise, buying a great camera doesn't mean you can create compelling photographs. Good drivers can drive any vehicle and a good photographer can make great images with any camera. Cameras don't take pictures, people do. Cameras are just another artist's tool.

A camera catches your imagination. No imagination, no photo... just junk. The word "image" comes from the word "imagination." It doesn't come from "lens sharpness" or "noise levels" etc etc. Your equipment DOES NOT affect the quality of your image. The less time and effort you spend worrying about your equipment the more time and effort you can spend creating great images. The right equipment just makes it easier, faster or more convenient for you to get the results you need.

Want to know what the best wide angle lens is on the market? Your feet! Move your tush and take two steps back! And the best macro lens? Get close!

I tend to annoy a few "pros" with this attitude. They believe that their super duper amazing equipment is what distinguishes them from the others. Well…. Good for them. I just don’t happen to agree. Professional photographers are not in business to have the newest pricey stuff. We are in business to make a living. We shoot with the cheapest equipment possible to do the job. We don’t baby our gear, or have a special lens cleaning brush we keep near in case one speck of dust enters our view finder. We bash it around, we clean lenses with our t-shirt, we focus on the end product, not the gear used to get there! You probably already have all the equipment you need, if you'd just learn to make the best of it. Better gear will not make you any better photos, since the gear can't make you a better photographer.

Photographers make photos, not cameras. It's sad how few people realize any of this and spend all their time blaming poor results on their equipment, instead of spending that time learning how to see and learning how to manipulate and interpret light.

I did not go to a fancy photography school. I did it the hard way. Educating myself by reading every possible article out there, and by getting my butt outside, taking chances and experimenting. By seeing what a picture looks like at f/4 versus f/11. By pushing my cameras limits to see how well it handles high ISO.

If you are really serious about taking better pictures, I highly recommend checking something out written by Chase Jarvis, another idol of mine. He wanted to prove that the best camera is the one you have with you, and he did just that. Click HERE or HERE for more info.

Well folks, if you have made it to this point, thanks for hanging on through my rant there haha! Below are some great tips to get you well on your way to improving your cell phone photography!!!

Crop don’t zoom!

Many cell phone cameras offer a digital zoom function, but you're almost always best pretending it doesn't exist. Even in the “liveview” preview, you'll be able to see how noticeably your images lose clarity the second you start to zoom. The camera is simply extrapolating what's already there and basically guessing what the image looks like. It gets ugly fast. When you're cropping, however, you're actually just sampling pixel information that was actually recorded. Many cell phones have 8-megapixels of resolution and sometimes more. That means you can crop substantially and still have plenty of resolution left for display on the web.

Get Close

Many cell phone cameras, especially the iPhone, really start to shine when you bring them in close to your subject. The small sensor provides a relatively wide depth of field so you can get entire objects in focus where cameras with bigger sensors and longer lenses would have trouble. When getting close, you can also usually have more control over the lighting of your subject. Are bright patches in the background of your composition throwing off the camera's meter and making your subject dark? Get closer and block it out all together. Small detail shots can be quite effective if done right.

Edit, Don't Filter

If you want your images to be unique, the last thing you should do is paint them with the same filters that literally millions of other people are using. For the record, I'm not anti-Instagram. I think the sharing element is fantastic, but the pre-determined "retro" washes are played out. And that goes for every other app slinging the same stuff. I suggest getting a full-on image editing app like the excellent SnapSeed, Photoshop Express, or iPhoto. They'll let you make reasonable adjustments, like contrast, sharpness, and color temperature. Stuff you'd actually do with images from a big camera. It's also not crazy to dump your images into Photoshop or another piece of editing software if you don't feel the need to share them right away. OK, it’s a little crazy, but people do it. It's with this decision that you can actually begin to choose your own style, or even extend the style you've already developed outside of your cell phone. It's a heck of a lot more effective than picking your favorite Hipstamatic filter and slapping it on every photo.

Don't Add Fake Blur

Depth of field will always be one of the biggest challenges for a cell phone camera. Wide angle lenses and tiny sensors make any substantial background blur difficult to achieve. But faking it almost always makes things worse. First, blur added with an editing app is usually applied uniformly across most of the frame. That's not the way a lens works, so it looks unnatural. Second, it's hard to be precise when selecting the object you want in focus so you can end up with harsh transitions from sharp to blurry. It's distracting and a dead giveaway that you’ve been messing with the image.  If you want the viewer to focus on one specific thing, make it the central object in the frame. Try to keep your backgrounds as simple as possible, even if it means asking your subjects to turn around or move a few steps back. It's worth it.

Pick a Better Camera App

This one applies more to iPhone users than Android users, but in any case, the goal is more control. There are a couple of standard choices in this category and any of them will treat you better than the stock camera app. I like Camera Awesome (made by SmugMug) because it allows you to shoot in bursts and separates the AF lock from the exposure lock. It's also free. Other apps like Camera+ have similar options for more controlled shooting. Whatever you pick, it's worth it to spend a little time really getting used to it. It seems silly to take out your phone and practice taking pictures, but you'll be glad you did it if you manage to catch a great shot while others are still flipping through pages of apps or trying to turn off their flash.

Keep Your Lens Clean

Your pocket or purse  is not a clean place, and the grime that lives within loves to migrate onto your cell phone camera lens. The results are hazy, dark images that won't look good no matter how many retro filters you slap on them. The lenses are now remarkably tough, so giving them a quick wipe with a soft cloth can't hurt (and your T-shirt will do OK in a pinch, but try not to make a habit of it). Once in a while, it's worth the effort to break out the lens cleaning solution and really get the grime off of it. It may not look dirty and you might not even notice it in your photos, but often a deep clean will make a difference.

Watch The Lens Flare

Adding lens flare is another trend in mobile photography right now that's getting more overdone by the minute. But, this one can actually work for you if you do it the natural way. The tiny lenses are often more prone to wacky light effects than their full sized counterparts, so you can really play it up if you want to. A silhouette with a bright, flaring background can actually look very stylish. If you want to control the flare in your shot, move the sun (or whatever bright light source is causing the refraction based mayhem) around in the frame. As you get closer to the edge, you'll often see the flare spread out and become more prominent. This is especially true with the new iPhone 5, which is also prone to image ruining purple fringing that should be avoided if possible. You can also cup your hand around the lens in order to make a DIY lens hood, which will cut down on the amount of flare if the light source happens to be out to the side of the frame. It may even be able to get rid of it all together.

Don't Forget The Rules Of Photography

This is by far the most important suggestion of all. The rules for taking a good picture don't change when you switch between cameras. Just because the camera can also make calls, doesn't mean you should ignore everything you know about balanced composition and expressive lighting. If you need to keep the rule of thirds or golden ratio layover on your screen at all times to help remind you, certainly turn it on. While the tips I've outlined here will help you maximize the strengths and minimize weaknesses of a cell phone camera, it's ultimately your skill, knowledge, and eye that will make photos worth looking at!
